I was a mathematics major at the University of California at San Diego. I was exposed to proofs of the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus, but I completed my major without ever understanding it. Then several years later, when one of my jobs was tutoring mathematics at a community college, I had to explain figuring surfaces and volumes of rotation to one of my tutees, and in the process I realized that the rate at which the volume increased as one progressed along the axis of rotation had to be proportional to the area—and I was enlightened, as they say in Zen.
